Default Stopping Save As Dialog appearing when closing a document

The problem is I cannot create a new blank document, type a few characters
and then close it without the Save As dialogue appearing.

When clicking Close, normally I should be asked if I would like to save the
file - yes, no or cancel.

Because the Save As dialogue is opening everytime I have to Save the
document to exit.

Any ideas why and how to prevent this?

Thanks in advance!

It's possible this behavior is caused by some type of document management
system outside Word.
