The hyper linked Table Of Contents and other links keep on openning in
hyperlink format, not the normal text which refers to the section or figure
or table. I've repeatedly gone through the entire document and selected the
links and then type shift F9 and the link converts to the normal text
reference. I then close and save the document. When I open the document again
all the hyper links that I've changed to text view convert back to hyperlink
format. How do I keep this from happening?

This suggests that you have field codes displayed in the window from which
you open the document. On the View tab of Tools | Options, clear the box for
"Field codes."
