Default protected Rich Text Format files

I am producing documents in MS Word 2003 and saving them as Rich Text Format.
I also save them as pdf's as well.

They are imported into my website.

I have selected the "read only" option for the security on the rtf files.
But they seem to load slower than the rtf files that are not read-only.

Can someone help me with the correct method of securing rft files for the web?
