Default White shading in Word table

I have a table in Word 2000 some cells have a small white line at the bottom
after I have applied a shade. It appears as if this happens after certain
cells have been merged.
Anybody know how to fix this?

This could indicate that you have applied shading to the text rather than
the cell.
