Default Page Numbering - Word 2002

I'm typing chapters for a workbook, each chapter a separate document. (Don't
ask ... I finally gave up trying to bend Word to my will and went around it
by handling the document this way.)

I set page numbering at the beginning of the document and formatted to start
numbering with 14. (Insert | Page Numbers | Format)

Now that I've finished the chapter, I find that the thing is seven pages
long but the page numbering alternates between 14 and 15 (i.e., 14, 15, 14,
15, 14, etc.).

I'm moving between two-columned and single-columned sections, so the
document is full of Insert | Page Break | Continuous or Next Page, but I
don't think this is the issue as I did the same thing in Chapter 1 and the
pagination is just fine there.

Every time I come to terms with Word and develop a reasonable working
relationship with it, something like this arises and I again cry out for my
beloved Word Perfect, where formatting was immediate, logical, and visible.

I'm hoping someone here can provide assistance that will prevent me from
having to retype the second (and third) chapter I've already completed.

Each time you change the number of columns, you've got a section break, and
each new section break is inheriting the "Start at 14" command you gave in
the first one. When you begin the second section, use Format Page Number to
"Continue from previous section," and then you should have no trouble with
the rest of the sections as you create them. In this instance, since the
section breaks are all already in place, you'll need to skip from one
section to the next and change the page number format in each one after the
first.

Note that when a section break is added (by Word or by you), the new section
will use the settings of the previous section. In this case, the "Start at"
setting for page numbers is being applied to the new sections, which
explains why the page numbers reset to 14 repeatedly. You can change this in
the Page Number Format dialog box. Go through the document and, for each
section, click Insert | Page Numbers. Click the Format button. Choose the
"Continue from previous section" option, and click OK. Click Close to close
the Page Numbers dialog box (do *not* click OK).
