Default Table of Contents Menu

I am an experienced Excel and Access programmer, and very familiar with Word,
but have never done any programming.

We have a network document that boils our phone system and office equipment
manuals down to their "Quick Reference" essence. Everybody loves it because
it's always available from their desk and it's simple. However, as we add
more equipment and services, it has nevertheless become several pages long.
A Table of Contents or other means to quickly jump to the topic of interest
would be helpful. This could be a toolbar, menu, or whatever--whatever makes
it easy.

Can anyone suggest an approach?

Thank you.
