I did a search and could not find anything specific to my question.
Yesterday I was on my laptop. Everything was working fine but when I went to
transfer my MS Word files to a CD, once transferred, I tried to open them.
The file conversion box opened and the text was garbled. No matter which
format I selected, it remained garbled, though sometimes it changed (still
garbled though). I did try to open them on my desk top, with the same results.

Hi Brian,

Can you describe a bit more detail on your definition of 'garbled'? (i.e. are the letters on top of each other, or are you seeing
square box characters instead of letters, etc).

Do you have the same problem if you copy the document back from the CD to your hard drive prior to opening?

Also what version of Word?

Thanks for responding. Sorry for not being more specific.

I am using Word 2003. This is an example of garbled text, line-by-line:

I also forgot to mention that the original document contained mostly tables,
so the resulting conversion of the above was 1,763 pages. Each page just had
a few lines at the top. I know the reason for so many pages has to do with
the tables.

Also, copying it back to the HD did not change anything, still garbled.

Hi Brian,

From the sample, it looks like the file being opened isn't being seen by Word as being a Word document. It's possible that it's
become corrupted.

In File=Open check to see if the file type is set to 'Word document'. If it is then in Tools=Options=General turn on the
[x] Confirm conversions on open
setting then use File=Open to see what file type Word thinks it's dealing with at this point.
