When I select a word or text to format (e.g. to underline it) the whole page
gets underlined. Why is this happening and how can I prevent it?

It sounds like the underlying style is set to automatically update.

You don't say which version of Word you're using... In Word 2002 or 2003,
choose Format - Styles and Formatting. Right-click on the current style in
the list, and choose Modify. Remove the check next to Automatically Update.

If you're using Word 2000, choose Format - Style, and remove the check next
to Automatically Update.
