[Siouxzqmc]

I have templates set up with Times New Roman 12. When i pull up these
templates to use, the headings all switch to Courier New 10 pt. I have to go
in and manually change the font in every document. Can someone direct me to
the correct place to fix this problem? If it is in the normal.dot, how do I
change it so that all documents use TNR all the time? Any help you can give
will be appreciated.

How did you change the font in these templates? Did you actually change the
relevant paragraph styles?

Also, it would be helpful if you mentioned which version of Word you are
using.

The font was not changed; it was the default font in Word 2003. Paragraph
styles were changed, but the template is only a first- and second-page header
with no text in the body of the template. Thanx.

It is still not clear what is happening. Are you saying that text has a
different font than the corresponding style definition when you create a new
document from the template? Is there any direct formatting in the template?
You can clear font formatting by selecting text and pressing Ctrl+SpaceBar.

Or are you inserting one file into another?

The style definition and the default font are the same (TNR). When I go to
type in a heading, the font changes to something besides TNR (usually Courier
New). I do a return, and then the text following the heading switches back
to TNR. Very strange.

If Word is automatically applying heading styles, you can turn that off by
clearing the "Built-in Heading styles" and "Define styles based on your
formatting" options on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of the AutoCorrect
dialog box; for more on autoformat, see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/TameAutoFormat.htm. (Note that if you
are using Word 2007, you can do this to open the AutoCorrect dialog box:
Click the Office button, and then click Word Options. In the Proofing
category, click the AutoCorrect Options button.)

You should then modify the heading styles to have the desired formatting and
apply the appropriate style manually when you need it.

To prevent the style from changing when you press Enter, change the setting
for "Style for following paragraph" in the Modify Style dialog box for the
relevant heading style(s).

To add to what Stefan has said:

1. If you apply a heading style to your heading and it is formatted as
Courier New, then that's because that heading style has been defined as
Courier New. You can modify the style to use some other font; see

2. The reason the font reverts to TNR when you press Enter is that the
"Style for following paragraph" for all heading styles is Normal.
