Default Word 2000/2003 page orientation is fixed at landscape

In both WORD 2000 and 2003 the page orientation is permanently fixed at
landscape. I am unable to switch orientation to portrait.

What happens when you try (File Page Setup click the Portrait
button)? Whatever it is, does starting in Safe Mode (holding down the
Ctrl key while starting) make the problem go away? Does this happen in
both new and existing documents?
