Default "Translating" normal.dot to Word 2007?

I've used my normal.dot for years and carry it around on my USB flash
drive. The ribbon configuration in the new Word 2007 is awful for me.
Is there any way to get back what I had? I'm so used to my own
toolbar configurations that even though I've started grouping commands
in the quick access area at the top of the Word 2007 at the office, it
still falls extremely short of the speed that I'd get with my
normal.dot's toolbars and features.

I've been googling but haven't found much other than general info
blurbs talking about normal.dot such as this:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc179177.aspx
It only seems to talk about migrating autotext entries.

Can our normal.dot be migrated to the Word 2007 environment? Also, is
there _any_ way to get -- as sometimes is the case -- features from an
version to work? i.e., would it be possible to be able to toggle my
own toolbars? I realize that if this is even possible that some
features wouldn' work but then I'd just go an re-establish such
features by invoking them in the new Word.

Thanks in advance! Much appreciated. I'd like to get back up to my
usu. speed and clicking around on that ribbon is far worse than the
old pulldowns used to be. Yech! Why fix what isn't broken ???!!! g

Started out positively, but no go. I'm at the office. We can't
install; registry is locked up tight. Can't edit it.

The only reason I'm using Word 2007 is because that's what they have
and I can't use an earlier version.

Are there any add-ins that give me complete functionality without
being installed since we're block from installing apps; the that also
doesn't require Word 2000-2003 be installed alongside, as this article
describes?

Re the ribbon: typical. 1 step forward to 2 steps back! sigh For
those of us who had all the commands they needed on a handful of
toolbars saved to the normal.dot, the ribbon is slowing us down
incredibly! I've customized the QAT somewhat, and the other small
access toolbar at the top but they're not going to come close to what
I've been working with with my own customized toolbars.

Any other links appreciated re fixing this problem. Googling brings
up too much unrelated info.

Thanks! D

Hi Fan,

If you still have your old templates with custom created toolbars, when you open or attach (Alt,T, I) one of those templates then
the toolbars should appear in an 'Add-ins' tab. (i.e. the custom toolbars are stored in templates and add-ins)

If you customized built in Word toolbars in a prior version then those don't appear, only 'homebrew' ones.

It's possible that the admins at work may have done more lockdown of the app than in prior versions, but you may want to check the
settings in
Office Button=Word Options=Add-Ins and in the Option Trust Center settings as well.

Ribbon customizations can be created outside of Word 2007, and can be stored in files that may or may not be considered 'install'
items by the settings your admin folks have invoked, but you may find it helpful to work with them if they allowed customizations in
previous versions to get what you need in this one.

Default "Translating" normal.dot to Word 2007?

The article only indicates registry changes to prevent reconfiguration when
Word 2007 runs alongside an earlier version.

Word 2007 does not use toolbars, but you can incorporate *custom* toolbars
from earlier templates, which is the gist of the web page, by including the
template either as a document template or add-in template. If you cannot add
templates to your company installation, then you need to speak with your IT
department to add it for you. If that is not possible then you are stuck
with using 2007 as presented.
