I have created a letterhead in Word that had a text box in the left-hand
margin. It is locked to the header. When I type on the document, the text
box in the left-hand margin disappears, leaving only a box outline. When the
typing is done, the letterhead returns to the place where I have anchored it.
It looks just fine when it prints.

If the disappearance is temporary, only while you type, then why do you care?
Resumably the content of the text box is primarily for the benefit of
recipients of the printed page, and you say it prints fine. But if it bothers
you, you could try replacing or adding a video card with more memory/fater
processor.
