Default email address hyperlink not working in Word 2003?

The problem the user is facing is that they place their email address in the
body of a document and in doing so the email address does not create the
usual link to Outlook [opening a new email message,
] instead this creates entry on the line looking
like this:
{HYPERLINK }
This entry does not allow for you to CTRL + click to generate a new email
message, if does nothing!!
If you cut and paste this: {HYPERLINK } into
a new Outlook email message it comes up with the link and the ability to
create the new message?
very confusing, any input welcome.
Thanks
BF
