Default marking and deleting right up to full-stop

For some reason my Word (97) has stopped "pulling in" the full-stop to the
last word in a sentence when I mark and press delete, i.e. it leaves a space
that has to be deleted again. How can I change it back again.

On the Edit tab of Tools | Options, make sure the box for "Use Smart Cut and
Paste" is checked.
