Default Word Form -- Radio buttons stopped working

I created two Word forms with groups of radio buttons. Each group has a
unique group name. I protected the documents, and they were working as
intended with the radio buttons mutually exclusive within each group.

Now, when I re-open the forms, they no longer work. The object box of the
second radio button in a two-button group is highlighted, as if it were in
design mode. The buttons are no longer selectable. Does anyone have a
solution?
