Windows 2007 and Vista - Read Only Problem
Really, I like Vista and I like Word 2007. It's just that I have some work to get done, don't like multiple files with a variety of names because I can't save them ... In Word, I have some files that will not save because the program says they are read-only. When I check the property parameters for the file through Windows Explorer, the read-only box is unchecked. Load up the file again and it is read only (says so after the displayed file name and when I try to save it). I don't put this in the same category as another problem I constantly run into (gosh, we'd let you move, delete, or rename that file but someone else is using it ... but of course, you're the only person who touches your machine, you're not on a network, and no programs are open but ...) but it is aggravating. If anyone has any idea about fixing the read only problem (or how to move those problem files), please let me know. It would be highly appreciated. |

Are those files on a CD?

No but the files have gone back and forth via Hotmail with
modifications by myself and another Word user. I believe the other user is using Word 2003 (not Word 2007 for certain). |

Sounds like you may be trying to edit the attachment, itself... Something
you really never could do, but XP let you _think_ your changes were being saved. I believe Vista addresses that deception by letting you know that the file is Read Only - but doesn't go on to tell you why, which is that the "attachment" is stored on a mail server for which you don't have write permissions. Save the attachment to your hard drive, open that copy for revision & you should be good to go. Keep in mind that the files don't go "back and forth" via email, they get *copied* from one place to another HTH |:) Bob Jones [MVP] Office:Mac On 6/10/07 4:56 PM, in article , " wrote: No but the files have gone back and forth via Hotmail with modifications by myself and another Word user. I might be misunderstanding what you are saying but these Word files are saved attachments and are being retrieved using Windows Explorer off of a laptop that is often not attached to a network. |
