Default opening Word document

When I click on a Word document in my files or on the desktop to open it. the
computer jams and won't open the document. If I open Word first I can then
open any Word document in my files. I can't open word documents directly by
clicking on them. This just started a week ago.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
