How do I TOTALLY delete a header, not just its text?
In Microsoft Word I can find information about modifying headers and footers,
or changing or deleting the text WITHIN headers and footers, but how do I delete the header completely? |

In Word 2003 (and I think XP) you can't once it has been created. You can
delete the contents and change the allowed margins. -- Charles Kenyon Word New User FAQ & Web Directory: http://addbalance.com/word Intermediate User's Guide to Microsoft Word (supplemented version of Microsoft's Legal Users' Guide) http://addbalance.com/usersguide See also the MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/ which is awesome! --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- This message is posted to a newsgroup. You can't. I'm not sure abou't 97 off the top of my head but certainly since
2000 every section always has three headers and three footers all the time. All you do is control their attributes and whether or not they are actually used. Even when not being used, they retain whatever content they had when they were used - well some do, some don't, it depends! In the Word object model each header and footer has the rather oddly named "Exists" property which indicates whether it is being used. -- Enjoy, Tony "Charles Kenyon" wrote in message ... Thank you. I guess there is some sort of logic in that, but it escapes me!

You are not alone. Most of us consider it a bug.

If the headers are empty, then you can go to Page Setup and set the Header
(and Footer) margins to zero. But note that once an H or F3 has been created in a document, they will always be occupied by an empty paragraph: you can minimise its affect by selecting it and setting the font size to 1 pt and making sure that the Paragraph formatting has no space before, space after or line spacing set up. -- Terry Farrell - MSWord MVP "Bruce Alan" Bruce wrote in message ... How do I TOTALLY delete a header, not just its text?
I tried your suggestion below and it didn't work. Maybe my prob is
different: Whenever I create a new Word '07 Doc my header takes up half the page and my footer a good portion of the bottom, so by default my cursor shows up mid-way down the page. I don't want any Header or Footer. How do I create a new Doc without either? p.s. I've searched the entire program and cannot find a way to do this ! It's possible that your program's behavior isn't related to the header and
footer at all. Go to the Page Layout tab and click the tiny arrow button in the title of the Page Setup group to open the dialog. Click the Layout tab. If the Vertical alignment dropdown is set to Center, that could be the cause -- set it to Top and click the Default button at the bottom of the dialog. While you're in that dialog, also check the Margins tab to see what the top and bottom margins are set to. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit.
