I am a transcriptionist. I keep daily files with many dictations and need to
refer to patients in old files. In Word 2000 all I had to do was
File/Open/Find/contents/includes phrase/Doe, John and it would list all files
within that open box with John Doe's dictation. I cannot find anybody with
the Word 2003 search box (basic or advanced). I have tried
contents/include/Doe, John. I have tried text or properties/include/Doe,
John. The windows search box is too cumbersome and timely, but now I'm back
to using it. I really need this feature on Word, but it is truly of no use
to me at this time. I have set it up to look at the folder I need. I didn't
need to do this before because it worked on the open box you were searching
in. The new box for the search is very broad, but doesn't work for me or
maybe it just doesn't work.

In the top right hand corner of the File Open dialog is a button - "Tools"
click that and you'll find the search button. You can choose where to search
by checking the folders and sub folders as required and what type of files
to search. It appears to remember your preferences between sessions (though
I am not sure about a reboot). If this search is not working for you the
probability is that the folder(s) that contain(s) your documents are not
checked.
