Default MDI - Side by Side Documents on wide screen

Is it possible to open two documents (say, Word, and Excel or PDF) at the
same time and have them position on only half of the screen so that they
might be reviewed simultaneously without switching back and forth through the
task bar?

Have you tried right-clicking the Taskbar and choosing one of the Tile
options? If you have more than these two windows open, you'll need to do
some more work, but it's possible. If you want to open two Word documents
side by side, there is a Compare Side by Side With command in Word 2003.
