I have several large files in Word 97 that comprise my personal cookbook.
I've been working on it for 8 or 10 years so you can imagine how large it is.
I've never had any troubles with it and Word 97 until just the other day.

First, the document is a 2 column page with 4 styles and each recipe name is
marked with an Index Mark. Just recently, I opened one of the files and the
Index Mark was showing. I clicked on the Show/Hide icon and all the
paragraph marks and other indicators were hidden but not the Index Mark.

The document still prints correctly but the display is obviouosly off.

I've ruled out the new display. I've reinstalled Word 97, SR-1 and SR-2a
Patch. Still broken. Any ideas?

Check in Tools/Options/View whether "Hidden" text is checked. If it is, this
means that it will still show even when you've clicked the "paragraph mark"
button. See if deactivating the checkmark helps.

It sounds like Tools | Options | View: "hidden Text" is ticked.
