Default auto numbering only works with tab

using word 2002, on new dell vista home prem desk top.

typing on a standard letter, new document.

when completing a list of names, vertically, using the auto numbering
feature, it only works if i "tab" after entering 1. if i use the space bar,
it doesn't auto enter the next number.

searched word help. i uninstalled the word 2002, & reinstalled it.

any ideas how to use auto numbering with space bar?

thank you, len kiesling

It will only work if you follow the number with a stop or a tab. If you
don't use either, then Word assumes that you are just typing ordinary text.
If it didn't assume ordinary text, every time you type a number followed by
a space, it would switch to list mode.
