When I create a word document which contains a typed in current date and then
save that document, If I should open that document at a later date the typed
date automatically updates to the current date . How can I prevent this from
occuring.

The date you've inserted is a Date field. Change it to a CreateDate
field. See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/tblsfldsfms/DateFields.htm.
