Default Word slow opening documents

I have MS Office 2000 installed and find opening a document quite slow - 30
seconds or so. This appears to affect all Word docs.

If I use Windows Explorer to find a word document and then double click it,
it opens slowly. It seems to make no difference to the speed if it is on a
network drive or the local hard drive.

Now, if I open Word, without trying to open a document at the same time, it
opens quickly. Then if I open the same document from within Word's FileOpen
command it also opens quickly.

I've tried setting the default printer to a local printer and it makes no
difference to the problem
