Default How do I remove "Read Only" status from a document?

I've created my first CD - re-writable. When I try to make changes, I get the
message that it's a Read Only document. I didn't set them up that way; just
opened them like any other Word document. I then transferred all the
documents to the CD. I knew I'd be making changes in the future.

I've tried everything I can think of to remove this; including deselecting
the Read Only status in Properties. Any suggestions? Thank you for your kind
assistance with this matter.
