Default Why will figure captions not number correctly?

My figure captions are not numbering correctly in a Word 2002 document. I am
using chapter numbers with the figure caption numbers which seems to be
working okay. However, midway through my document the figure captions revert
to number one again (e.g., 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 4-1, 4-1 . . .). I have tried
updating the captions and pasting the graphics into a new document, but this
has not helped. The figure captions continue to misnumber. What am I doing
wrong, or is my original document/figures corrupt?

Which version of Word? Does your document contain section breaks?

Press Alt+F9 to view the field codes. You probably see a combination of StyleRef
and SEQ field for the chapter-figure number? Please copy what you see INSIDE the
{ } brackets of the SEQ field and paste it into your reply. (BTW, Alt+F9 again
to hide the field codes)

Hello Cindy -
I am using Word 2002. My document has one section break that separates the
title page from the main text. As instructed, below is the information
inside of the {} brackets.

Furthermore, I think the problem may be related to the numbered headings in
the document which are numbered in the same manner as the captions using a
heading style (e.g., Heading 2: 4-1, 4-2, etc.). When I change these headings
to "Normal" style (no numbers), the figure caption numbers 'correct
themselves'; however, I need to keep the heading styles to 'build' the table
of contents.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

{ STYLEREF 9 \s }-{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \s 9 }

Hi ?B?a25naHQtdXNh?=,

{ STYLEREF 9 \s }-{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \s 9 }

There is very good information on all field codes in Word's
Help files. For the SEQ field:
---
\s
Resets the sequence number at the heading level following
the "s". For example, { SEQ figure \s 2 } starts numbering
at the Heading 2 style.
---
Remove the \s 9 and I think your problem will disappear.

Note: this was very difficult to get rid of permanently in
Word 97. It always stuck it back in when you created a
caption using the menu (rather than, say, copy/paste). But
the problem should not occur in later versions.
