Default how to stop numbering blank lines, define new number format box

Can anyone tell me why my numbers lists have numbers on the lines that are
suppossed to be blank? I select the all portions of list I want to be
numbered at the same time. Please don't tell me I have to select them
individually!

Instead of getting:
1. Use a 28 cm circumference mari and two colors of thread, one main color
and one contrasting color. Make sure your main color matches the wrap color.

2. Wrap the mari in one of the colors you are going to be using - usually
the darker of the two chosen colors, which will be the main color.

3. Wrap the mari in one of the colors you are going to be using - usually

4.
5. Mark the mari for a C8 using "invisible" marking thread in the same color
(pearl cotton can be used but a thinner thread will work better) as the mari.

My other issue is the "Define New Number Format" dialog box. I know that
it's easier to go through and format an already existing List Number style.
but I **REALLY**, **REALLY** want to know how to do this. When I open the
dialog box the alignment box may say left, but the preview still shows the
numbers in other positions. It doesn't matter if I open the "Define New
Number Format" box from either the "Multilevel Lists" or "Numbering" buttons.

Thanks!

looks like you have empty paragraphs in your list. While you can
certainly number only every other paragraph, I highly recommend you
enter the modern text processor realm and use spacing before or after to
get get whitespace, not empty paragraphs.

Version of Word?

What's true in all versions: you want to do your numbering style-based,
_not_ via the numbering button on the toolbar/ribbon directly.

Don't use empty paragraphs for "blank lines." Instead add some Space
Before/After to the numbered paragraphs (or, preferably, add both the
numbering and the space to a style that you use for those paragraphs).

Default how to stop numbering blank lines, define new number format bo

Hi, Robert

Thanks for the quick response. The text I'm numbering is actually older
stuff that has already been completed and saved. (It was done on Word 2000.)
The spaces in between the numbered paragraghs are already in place.

How do I do that? ...and

Is there an easy way to do this or will have to go through the text and
delete the blank lines then add them back in as before or after spacin.?

I have Word 2007

Thanks again!

If the lines are truly blank, you can search for ^p^p and replace with ^p.
If you've used a specific style for the numbered paragraphs, modifying the
style will update the paragraphs.
