Default Caption problems in MS Word

I have several problems with caption and figure placement. Of current
concern is why captions for figures (e.g. linked to a PowerPoint slide)
sometimes can be selected and grouped with a figure and other times they
cannot be grouped. The former have the corner "handles" when you click them,
but the latter can only be selected by dragging the mouse across them. The
former are nicely sized to go with the figure width, but the latter run all
the way across the page.

When you insert a caption, it is inserted in a text box (handles) if your
graphic is wrapped but inline if the graphic is inline.
