Default Displaying charts (graphs) formed from tables in Word

Sorry if this is a very elementary question but I have tried everywhere for
a solution on "Help", and many books.
I have to make a graph from a table in Word for Advanced ECDL exam. It seems
it would be so much easier to do it in Excel!
I can make and edit the chart OK but it only displays in print preview. An
"embedded MS graph" icon appears in the document and when I click on it to re-
edit it says corrupt or no longer available. I have looked in tools, options
to see if anything needs to be ticked but can't see anything.

I would like to be able to see the chart and if possible move it about and re-
edit it.

Has anyone got the time to give me step by step, foolproof, instructions from
the start please? I would like to pass this exam!
Many thanks.

My first reaction was: just press Alt+F9 to toggle the field code off. Then I
read on to the part about corruption, then went back and saw the term "icon",
and...

I think this is a problem with the configuration of the machine you're working
on. You shouldn't be getting an icon. A field code, possibly, but not an icon.
It might help if you give us the EXACT message Word is showing when you click
(or double-click? Please be very accurate in your problem description).

You should also tell us exactly which version of Word is involved.

To get us a step further, even with the outstanding questions: try starting Word
in SAFE MODE and see if that makes any difference.

Also try booting Windows in Safe Mode and see if that changes anything.

Dear Cindy
Thank you. Word Version 2002 SP3 WINDOWS XP Pro.
When I hightlight the data and choose Insert, Picture, Chart or Insert Object,
MS Excel Graph, I just get
{EMBED MS Graph. Chart.8\}. If I do Alt F9 IT disappears into the black chart
"handles"but there is nothing inside. The chart displays OK in print preview.
The error message when I click on the {EMBED MS Graph. Chart. } part is "This
object is corrupt or no longer available."

Quite by chance I found that when I inserted WordArt into letter this
afternoon, that didn't display properly either, although it showed on print
preview. I couldn't edit it once it was done and all that showed on the
screen were 2 off-centre black lines - presumably on either side of the
lettering.I have never had trouble with WordArt before.
If I didn't know that my Norton virus protection was up-to-date I would begin
to wonder!
I have been experimenting a lot to learn about field codes lately - could I
have changed a setting to cause this?
I have never used "safe mode" so would need more instructions. Sorry.
Thanks again.

Dear Cindy,
Since sending my last reply 20 minutes ago I have been searching the online
help - I have only just had Broadband for a week! - and I think I have found
the solution. I had "picture place holder" checked. It seems to be OK now.
Thank you very much - and if you are ever in Pembrokeshire UK come and see
us.
