Default Help with mailmerge fields

Hi, I have a question about mailmerge fields in Word 2002. How in the world
do I edit these field codes? I am trying to do a mail merge with data from
Excel. Some of the fields should be blank but a 0 is appearing instead.

I know this question has been asked and answered before all over the
internet and even here, but every time I try to enter the suggested syntax
for the field codes it just doesn't work. I'm not even sure where I should
go to edit them. I've tried right clicking on the field in question and
going to Edit Field, I've tried right clicking, choosing Toggle Codes and
editing right in there, and I've tried using the If...Then...Else feature in
Insert Word Field. Can anyone please help me both with the exact syntax to
do this and step by step instructions on where and how to do this?

Thank you in advance. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
