Default Simplify TOC Options

The MS design decision to sort the TOC in different ways, see "Table of
Contents Options" ... is confusing to most everyone, and when you have to
update documents maintained by several people the "Styles and Formatting"
becomes large and unmanageable... Please redesign and simplify.

Default Simplify TOC Options

Hi Suzanne,

There is no essential difference in WD2007 - although you can select
from a "gallery" of style sets as well as going to the dialog.

I think the OP is referring (under Options on the TOC tab) to the
association between ...
Heading Style and TOC level
.... which can be modified.

Some of his "contributors" may be contributing confusion as well as content!

However, I think it might have been that way for a long time.......

Are you referring to Word 2007? Otherwise, I have no idea what you're
referring to as "sort[ing] the TOC in different ways."

Default Simplify TOC Options

The ability to associate heading styles (both built-in and custom) with
different TOC levels is one of the strengths of this dialog IMO. It allows
you to do tricks such as removing numbering from noncontiguous entry levels
(1 and 3, for example).
