I have a dear friend who finally invested in a computer... and purchased
Word 2007.

I am an above average proficient user of Word -- through 2003 (I do not own
2007).

I know she is going to be looking for lots of help. Besides annoying all of
you on a regular basis... is there a really good, fairly "simnple" text
that would be a good resource for her. Lots of pics (she is a visual
learner).

The "dummies" series I suppose is an option although I have not checked out
recent releases. I would rather something a little more "professional" --
while still designed for the TOTALLY new user. (She never used any version
of Word, WordPerfect... nothing!)

So what do you all recommend? (Maybe I'll get a copy for me to -- so when
she asks a question -- I can answer it or at least refer her to the right
page!)

I got the book Microsoft Office 2007 for Dummies and it's very in depth.
Considering it has Common Tools, Word 2007, Outlook 2007, PowerPoint 2007,
Excel 2007, Access 2007, Publisher 2007 and One Step Beyond.

I am still making my way through it, the first part applies to several
programs and then they have each program in it's own section.
I bought it online (used) and it wasn't too expensive.

Though I still look for online tutorials and come on the groups to look
for answers and ask.

What I've found (and I've mainly been on the Puslisher group up till
recently) is I can open the newsgroup and read down it and learn something
new, from what others have asked. I keep a running notebook of this.

Like you, I had an older version of Office, and learned as I went along,
or looked up, asked when I wanted something specific. Lately, I've gotten
the idea that actually learning ALL about a program, from scratch so to
speak, might be better, in the long run.

Everytime I do a few pages in the Dummies book, or read on this group, I
learn something new I wasn't even aware that Word even DID (LOL)

One format I find helpful for beginners is the "Step by Step" guides from
Microsoft Press. They have lots of screen shots and (as implied)
step-by-step instructions. Microsoft Press also publishes something called
"Microsoft Office Word 2007 Plain & Simple"
(http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0735...pt#reader-link) that
looks very promising. At the very outset, it promises "No Computerspeak."
Since Amazon shows only the first (introductory) chapter, the only way to
get a sense of the actual content is to use the "Surprise Me" link, which
shows some sample pages (color screen shots, which are really helpful).
However, be sure to read "A Few Assumptions" on page 5.
