Default Number Alignment on Headings

In some documents I see that the the header numbers are aligned inside
the page margin. For others, the numbers are aligned with the period
just outside the margin.

What controls this?

The Heading Style formatting. Some must have an outdent paragraph attribute
applied (that is negative indent setting). Click in the affected Heading and
move the indents on the Ruler. When you have the correct alignment again,
right-click on the Style and select Update to match the selection.
