Default Em dash and curly quotes displayed strangely

Word 2007

I've just come upon an intermittent problem that is pretty perplexing--The
spacing of the em dash and the curly quotes is strangely affected.

Everywhere in the document that's being displayed, it's as if the character
on either side of the dash or the quote is a half-space closer to the dash
or quote than it should be. This results in the surrounding characters
appearing to be superimposed in part over the dash or quote.

For some reason, this happens only when the document is displayed in New
Times Roman, 12 pt.

If I change the font size, the display is normal.

If I change the font style, the display is normal.

If I view go to another computer on the network, and open the document that
resides on the "affected" computer, it displays normally (which suggests
it's nothing in the document file itself, but rather a display issue).

This is, as I say, and intermittent problem--The next time I open the
affected document, it may display properly.

When I do notice the problem, any NEW document I create in NTR, 12 pt.,
displays the same whacky way.

Right now, I work with only one particular document in New Times Roman, 12
pt., which for certain formatting requirements MUST be in that font and
size, so changing it isn't an option. It's a lengthy work-in-progress, and
I'm reluctant to do substantial work on it, just in case the problem doesn't
continue to "fix itself."

Any ideas? (I first thought of the possibility of a corrupt normal.docm
file, but discarded that notion because as I say, if I view the self-same
file from another network computer, it displays OK.)

Many thanks!

Annoying though this may be, unless the characters print incorrectly,
there's likely nothing you can do about it.

The question that begs an answer: does it print like that?

Excellent question! And one that I don't know the answer to, as it didn't
occur to me. I'll have to wait till the next time the problem occurs.

Thanks.
