In "print layout" view mode in word 2003 pictures (images) don't merge, so I
can't see it or change size, neither edit it. only a blank frame is showing.
In reading layout view mode pictures merge and are visible, so the print
does it.

Do you have "Picture placeholders" checked on the View tab of Tools |
Options?

Try Tools Options, on the View tab under Show uncheck "Picture placeholder"
