Default How do I get chapter numbering to appear in cross referencing?

I have my TOC and footers set up to use chapter numbering and page numbering,
so they look like 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-1, 2-2 etc.
My document is a single document containing multiple chapters.
My cross references use the PAGEREF field.
How do I get the correct chapter numbers to appear in the cross references
because at the moment, if it says "See X on page 5" you don't know which page
5 it refers to.
Please H E L P !
Thanks
Elizabeth

Word can do what you want, assuming that you have the chapter/page
numbering set up correctly. For instructions, see:

I want to include the chapter number with the page number in the
Header – how can I do this?

Maybe I misunderstand you.

I am pretty sure that my chapter and page numbering in footers and TOC are
set up correctly, as described in the article you linked to. However, the
chapter number does not appear in the cross references.

Maybe I will redo and experiment.

Unless you meant I should read that article because at the end it says:
"Using this method, the chapter number will automatically appear in your
Table of Contents. (If you use the StyleRef field, or cross-references, as
suggested by Word 2000's Help topic on the subject, it won't)."

Thank you for replying though !

No, you didn't misunderstand. When chapter/page numbering is created
as the article describes, you'll get page numbering which includes a
chapter number. In other words, you can then *reference* an x-y format
for page numbering (for the purposes of TOC and cross-reference
creation), but you cannot use cross-references or StyleRef fields
to *create* the x-y format.

Note, however, that if you created the cross-references before you
created the x-y page number format, you may have to update your
cross-reference fields. Select the entire document and press F9.

I do apologise. It was my misunderstanding. I hadn't saved my attempts at
outline numbering for the styles. I have done that now and it does show up in
the pagerefs automatically.
I'm having a little difficulty in that it now goes 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-5,
2-6 but I'm sure this is my own stupid fault as well... I will try to work
out why but if you know, I would be grateful. I'm sure I ticked restart
numbering at 1 wherever I could...

Make sure that you have a section break before each heading whose
outline number should be included with the page number. Then make sure
that you set the "Start at" value (in the Page Number Format dialog
box) to 1. Note that this must be done for each section.

Wonderful - Thank you that worked.
Now my only teeny minor problem is that I would like the Contents pages to
be just i, ii, iii and despite setting up a footer that looks like this for
this section, it seems not to be being used, and is instead going 1-1, 1-2,
then for Chapter 1, going 1--1, 1-2 again.

Insert a section break after the contents page, and then modify the
"Number format" setting in the Format Page Number dialog box for the
new section. Don't forget to update the TOC when you're done.

Hmm, I have a section break after the contents, and the number format is set
up correctly for that section....
It is still going 1-1, 1-2 for the TOC then for Chapter 1, going 1--1, 1-2
again.

For the first section, which has the contents, you need to go into the
Page Number Format dialog box and select the desired numbering format
for your page numbers.

Note that if the contents section has no Heading 1 paragraphs (which
makes sense), you cannot check the "Include chapter numbering" option,
since it would then reference page numbers from the following section.
After you've made the changes, close the dialog box and the
header/footer area and switch to Print Preview and back, in order to
force an update of field codes.

[To open the Number Format dialog box: Put the cursor in the relevant
section. On the View menu, click Header and Footer. Click the Format
Page Number button on the Header/Footer toolbar.]

Correction: you cannot check the "Include chapter numbering" option,
since it would then reference HEADING numbers (not page numbers) from
the following section.
