Default SAVEDATE feature not updating document

I've created a SAVEDATE field and it seems to do the right thing in the
saved file (saving it with the current date and time), but it doesn't
update what I see in the document unless I right click and Update Field.

Is there a way to have the field updated automatically on the screen as
well as in the file?

Automatically? No. Add an update macro to your toolbar -
