Default what is the difference between picas and spaces?

I have to use picas as opposed to spaces in a paper I have to write. We are
simulating a script and it requires to insert certain words and phrases at
certain picas? This is where I am lost.

A pica is 1/6 of an inch = 12pt = 1 EM (in the US). Also a standard
character width on typewriters.

Go to Tools Options and select Picas as your unit of measure -- the ruler
will be displayed accordingly. Then set tabs at the required positions.
