Default Default no columns

In a windows 2000 PC. my Word new document keeps coming up with two columns.
How do I change this default to just a regular blank page? I could not find
the Normal.dot file that some other post talked about.

Normal.dot will be found in the folder indicated at tools options file
locations user templates.

instructions for location Normal.dot.
