Default Showing/Hiding Styles in Word 2007

I'm still not used to using the Quick Style Gallery in Word 2007, and prefer
to view the list of styles on the right side of the screen.

I wanted to change the styles that appear in the list on the right side of
the screen (I think this is the "Styles" pane). I tried using the Manage
Styles button, and ended up accidentally selecting every predefined style in
Word to appear in that pane. Ooops! Not exactly what I intended to do.

Of course, I don't want to see that many styles. To try to fix this, I went
back into Manage Styles, and selected (as a test) a single Style and clicked
Hide, and then that style is indeed no longer shown in the Quick Style
Gallery. However it still appears in the Styles pane! Is there a way for me
to hide some styles that are now shown in the Styles pane?

The Styles panel has display options similar to those in the Styles &
Formatting task pane in Word 2002/2003. Click on Options and choose
"Recommended" (the default) or "In use" or "In current document" instead of
"All styles," which is what it's probably currently displaying.

Thank you Suzanne!!! For some reason I thought I should be able to do
everything from within the "Manage Styles" button. Whew - what a relief!

Happy Thanksgiving to you -

It may well be that the Options setting reflects what you last had selected
in Manage Styles (you probably had to choose "All styles" at some point in
order to find ones to recommend?).

AFAICT, neither "In use" nor "In current document" reliably shows the
styles that are in use in the current document (and as you can see, I
have no idea what the difference between those two terms is supposed
to be). Rather, what they do seems to be dependent on whether a style
is on the recommended list.

Specifically, I had a doc with a paragraph in Body Text. I could
verify that it's in this style by choosing to show "All styles", in
which case "Body Text" appears and is highlighted (there's a blue box
around it). But with both "In use" and "In current document", "Body
Text" failed to appear in the list of styles. "Normal" (which I never
use) and "List paragraph" (which I don't recall ever using) do appear
in the list if I choose "In current document", but not if I choose the
list for "In use"; and I can confirm that neither is actually used _in
the current document_ by clicking on the hidden down arrow to their
right in the Styles pane.

It turns out that I can fix this by modifying what styles show up as
Recommended (see instructions he http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-3224590.php),
the "Body Text" style can be made to appear, and the "Normal" style to
disappear, in the "In Use" and "In current document" views of the
Styles pane. (The "In current document" view still shows the un-used
"List Paragraph" style; guess I have to remove that from the
Recommended list too.)

Also, the order that the styles are listed in the Styles pane appears
to depend on the numbers assigned in the "Manage Styles" dialog;
there's no way to automatically order them alphabetically, which would
be my preference.

Sheesh... took me awhile to figure this much out, and I'm still
confused!
