On my previous computer I had Windows 98 and Microsoft Office Standard 2000.
On the new computer I have Windows XP and Microsoft Office Basic 2003. I
saved my old files on floppies, but when I try to open them on my new
computer, I get an error message saying the file is closing immediately to
protect my computer from DEP.

Is there no way I can use my old files???? I'm a writer; this would be a
heavy loss.
What can I do?

Never ever read from, write to or print from floppy with Word. This is the
most certain method of ensuring document corruption. Copy to the hard disc
and work on the document from there.

I also get shut down copying and pasting anything into word.

There's a DEP error message and even if I turn off DEP the whole thing
crashes.
