I'm using Word and when I hit enter I see a symbol that looks like a
paragraph sign. There are arrows when I hit the tab key. How do I eliminate
these symbols from my text? Thanks!

Click on the Show/Hide tool in the Standard Toolbar. It's the tool that looks
like a paragraph mark.

They are not in your text - they don't print. They are in your document, and
will be there whether you see them or not. You'll find yourself able to
reformat documents much more easily, though, if you see them.
