Default Word 2003 Insert Text Box Providing Canvas and Text Box

I am running Word 2003 SP1 (as part of Office Pro 2003) and am fully up to
date per Office Update. When I attempt to insert a text box via Insert-Text
Box, I first get a blank drawing and then a text box. If I click on the
drawing and delete it, the text box also is deleted. It is almost as if I
have selected Insert-Picture-New Drawing just prior to trying to insert a
text box. But for some reason, the textbox is linked in some manner with the
canvas that is created via the Insert-Text Box. If I move the text box
away from the canvas, I can safely delete the canvas wihtout having the text
box be deleted. Is this a known issue? I checked the knowledge base and did
not see any mention of this.

On the General tab of Tools | Options, clear the check box referring to the
drawing canvas.
