Default Why are my documents read only?

I've got a peculiar thing happening in Word 2003. When I save a document and
re-open it, it is saying that it is read only. And yet I haven't set it as
read only and when I check the security options, read only isn't selected.

I'm using track changes on these particular documents but I can't see what
difference that would make. Can anyone help?
