Default Insert File not working

I am inserting a Word document into another Word document.

I click on Insert, File and nothing is happening.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you.

Well, from what you wrote, you didn't choose a file to insert!
Got milk? I mean, got details?

Hmm, what should happen is an Explorer like dialog box should
open that lets you navigate to the file you want to Insert.

Exactly what happens? Does the menu go away or fly back up, does
it just sit there, or what? is it greyed out or anything?
Right after you click on Insert, File, can you minimize the
Word window? If you can, then the command isn't working at all.
If you cannot, then it's working but the windows isn't being
shown for some reason.

Have you recently installed, or updated, or upgraded Office or
Word? It almost sounds as though an install failed on you.

Can you say for sure that you do not have a virus or spyware
causing a problem? If so, what do you use to be sure?

What version of Word? What country are you in? What language is
Word in?

Do you know how to do an "re-install in place" of Word? I
suspect that might be called for, but would rather see answers to
the above questions first.

Pop

Hey Pop,

(Answers are in the parentheses)

Hmm, what should happen is an Explorer like dialog box should open that lets
you navigate to the file you want to Insert.

(I have used this before and understand the way it works but right now
nothing is happening..nothing launches..it just sits in my document)

Exactly what happens? Does the menu go away or fly back up, does it just
sit there, or what? is it greyed out or anything?
Right after you click on Insert, File, can you minimize the Word window?
If you can, then the command isn't working at all.

(Insert, File ..it ends there)

If you cannot, then it's working but the windows isn't being shown for some
reason.

Have you recently installed, or updated, or upgraded Office or Word? It
almost sounds as though an install failed on you.

(No other than this issue all is working well)

Can you say for sure that you do not have a virus or spyware causing a
problem? If so, what do you use to be sure?
(Adaware, Spybots, CWShredder, TrendOfficeScan)

What version of Word? What country are you in? What language is Word in?

(I know how to "repair word" through add/remove programs)

Many thanks!

HI,
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to help much now. I
was hoping to get a hint on something from your answers, but it
looks like you're doing the right things. Right now I think the
best thing is to try to reinstall it from the Add/Remove as you
suggested you're already familiar with.

If that fails to help, then, in the absence of someone jumping in
with better experience, I'd say a Remove and Reinstall would be
in order. If you do use Remove and then reinstall it, before you
do the reinstall, you should go to the Word folder (where
winword.exe is stored) and delete that folder and everything in
it and below it. If you have any macros, etc., you might lose
them; I'm not sure where they're stored.

For EITHER of the two things I mentioned above, be SURE to turn
OFF your antivirus software while you do the installs/repairs.
AV apps can make strange things go wrong with installs that can
occasionally be pretty confusing later on. It should be turned
off when any install is done, in fact.
Then of course be sure to turn it back ON before you touch the
internet!

Sorry I wasn't able to help at all,

Pop

Go to Tools | Macro | Macros and see if there is an InsertFile macro listed
(other than in "Word commands"). If so, this macro has hijacked the built-in
command, and you'll need to track down what add-in or template it's coming
from.

Alternatively, is the window opening behind your document? This might happen
if you're getting interference from Norton AntiVirus; if you're running NAV,
disable its Office Plug-in.

I think you have slightly misunderstood. I'll explain. In Word, there is a
built in command InsertFile. If a user wants to modify the action of a built
in command, you write a macro and give it the same name as an internal
command - in this case, InsertFile.

When this is done, the custom macro command will be found listed under
Tools, Macros. If it isn't listed, then the command hasn't been modified. To
see the list of Word's actual Commands, Go to Tools, Macros and in the
Macros In... box, choose Word Commands. You will find InsertFile listed
there.

As there is no custom InsertFile, Suzanne's alternative solution is most
likely. Are you using Norton Anti Virus?

The fix for this (and then maybe someone can explain what happened).

In order to fix the problem you need to go Tools/Customize, select the Menu
Bar (in the Toolbar Tab) and then click Reset. Say OK to the message that
you will get. This will reset the toolbar to Words Native functionality.
Close Word and Reopen it and it will then add all other customization back
to word.

Pressing reset will 'uncustomise' the toolbars and menus. It won't change
any commands at all. If Reset sorted out your problem, somehow the command
must have been removed.

Thank you Terry..apparently the document management system we are using
overwrote the option.

Thanks again!

Pressing reset will 'uncustomise' the toolbars and menus. It won't change
any commands at all. If Reset sorted out your problem, somehow the command
must have been removed.
