Default work stored on word 98 gobblygook on word 2003 - help!

hello - hope someone can help. i have a lot of work stored on disc when i
used word 97 or 98. i have just recently changed to word 2003 and when i try
to view or print it seems to have jumbled everything up and it makes no
sense. (i am writing a book and cannot afford to lose what i have done) any
suggestions most gratefully received!
thanks,
