Keeping original formatting when inserting a file
I have a document where each page has a logo and a page number
inserted in the footers. I am using a Table of Contents to track the page number of various sections. My appendix starts on page 28. Starting on page 29 I want to insert other documents I have using the Insert File command. Some of these documents have their own footers. During my first attempt, the footers of the inserted file took over the whole document. How can I insert a document and keep the formatting of the original document and the inserted files to themselves? Ideally, I would like to keep the page numbers continuous throughout the entire document but I don't know if I can have my cake and eat it too. |

There's no easy way to do this in Word. You can use section breaks if you
need different headers and footers; but inevitably you get style clashes between the various documents and there's no way to resolve that other than renaming styles, which is a pain in itself. An alternative is to output each document separately to PDF, then use Acrobat to combine them. Acrobat can also add page numbers across the full set of pages. wrote in message oups.com... Hi ScoutLeader,
For your Appendix, you'll need to insert a Section break and make sure the headers and footers are not set as 'link to previous'. Keeping original formatting when inserting a file
Macropod...I did as you suggested and it worked great! My Appendix,
and all previous pages have the footers I want. The inserted document starts on page 29 and has it's own footers and I the page numbers are continuous for the entire document. Thanks so much so far! However....(and you just knew there was a however coming!)...the only problem I now have is that when I do an update field on the Table of Contents, and choose update the entire table, my new Appendix shows up with the proper page number however the first few lines of text from the inserted document are appearing with a page number. Interestingly enough, the title of the inserted document does not appear in the Table of Contents, just the lines of text after it. I can delete each unwanted line separately but each time I perform the update the text comes back. I'd rather learn how to fix the problem rather than just delete the lines when I'm finished creating the document. Any insights? I figured it out! The first few lines of text, for some reason, were
assigned a Header 1 style during the insertion process. Once I put them back to normal the lines disappeared from the Table of Contents. Thanks for the help...the document looks fantastic! |
