Default How can I restore original blank document settings

Somehow my document settings have gotten really messed up. If I try to
cut/paste, or even opening previously saved documents that used to be
properly aligned, everything is off-kilter. There is a small dotted-line box
around the whole page when I open a new document. Can anyone help me?
Thank you in advance.

The dotted-line box is probably "text boundaries" (which I would not dream
of operating without). You could rename Normal.dot to regain some default
Word settings, but this one would not be affected since it is a Registry
setting; you have to change it in Word's Options.
