I am working on a document to which I would like to apply just heading styles
that I've created and use regularly, but leave everything else as it is. The
document already has a heading 1 that is different from mine. Does this mean
I have to modify the document's style or can I import my own and replace the
document style? My colleague is also in the same situation, except that she
has to use my styles. It would be useful if we didn't have to create the
style over and over again, since we will be working on several documents.

We are using Word 2003.

Documents created from a template that contains your styles will also
contain your styles. However you can use the organizer (Alt+F8 Organizer)
to copy the styles from the document/template containing them to the
document/template requiring them - overwriting existing styles of the same
names..

When you use the Organizer, the file you want to copy _from_ appears
in the right window and the file you're working on appears in the left
window. You need to click "Close" under the right window, then click
the same button that now says "Open," change the file type to look for
from "template" to "document," and browse to the file whose styles you
want to copy. Its styles then appear in the right window.

Select the files you want to copy (since you're only doing Headings,
you can click the first one and shift-click the last one), click
"Copy" in the middle column, and when it asks you if you want to
replace the styles with the same name, click "Yes to all."
