Default Re Word-can't end program--will not respond to any command.

After using "Word", it will not respond at all. I have to shut down computer
manually in order to end program. I have reported it and they suggest that I
need an "Office Update"which I am unable to do.. I follow directions but
somehow, nothing happens. Can you direct me.....help.
